Palamedes Swallowtail (Papilio palamedes)

Geographic Distribution: North and Central America.
 
Wingspan: 112-132mm.
 
Larval host plants: Red Bay (Persea borbonia) and Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)
 
Habits: Broadleaf evergreen swamp forests and woods near rivers.
 
Identification: These butterflies are similar in appearance to the Black Swallowtail whose range overlaps but is found in most of the eastern US. The Black Swallowtail has distinctive spots on its abdomen.
